The National Institutes of Technology (NITs) are premier public engineering colleges in India and are the next best thing after IITs. They have been declared as ‘Institutes of National Importance’ alongside the IITs by an Act of Parliamentary in 2007.  The NITs receive special recognition and grant from the Government of India, due to the high competition for NIT seats, they also attract some of the best students from across the country, which benefits both the students and the institutes alike.

They offer many courses for bachelors, masters, and doctorate levels in different branches of engineering and technology. In this article, we have listed NIT rankings for your benefit.

NIT Rankings 2017

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) was approved by the Ministry of Human Resource Development to rank institutions, including each NIT college, across the country on parameters which broadly cover “Teaching, Learning and Resources,” “Research and Professional Practices,” “Graduation Outcomes,” “Outreach and Inclusivity,” and “Perception”. So the following six factors are considered while ranking NITs:

1. NIT, Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu

Situated in a sprawling area of 800 acres, the institute offers UG courses in ten branches and PG courses in twenty-one disciplines of science, engineering, and technology besides M.S. (by research) & Ph. D. in all the departments.

2. NIT, Surathkal, Karnataka

With a lush green area of 295 acres, the residential campus is self-sufficient in every aspect. Some of the institute’s best practices include Remedial Coaching Classes for students with less exposure, a Hindi Section, Workshop on Workplace Sensitisation, Professional Skill Enhancement Programme, etc.

3. NIT, Warangal, Telangana

The institute offers eight UG programs (B.Tech.) in engineering, twenty- nine PG programs ( M.Tech, M.Sc., MCA & MBA) in engineering, sciences and management and research programs in engineering, sciences, humanities, physical education and management. It has a strong reputation for its Research & Development, Industrial Consultancy, Continuous Education and Training Programmes for teachers and technical personnel. The institute boasts of thirteen academic departments and a few advanced research centers in various disciplines of engineering, pure sciences, and management.

4. National Institute of Technology, Calicut

This institute was formerly the Calicut Regional Engineering College (CREC), is a federally funded technical university and an institute of national importance governed by an act passed by the Parliament of India. The campus is situated near Chathamangalam, 22 kilometers (14 mi) north east of Kozhikode, on the Kozhikode–Mukkam Road. It was established in 1961 and was known as Calicut Regional Engineering College (CREC) until 2002. It is one of the National Institutes of Technology established by the Government of India for imparting high standard technical education to students from all over the country. The college is among the very few institutions in the country to host a supercomputer of its own, and among the pioneers in the country to have a dedicated nanotechnology department.

5. NIT, Rourkela, Orissa

The Institute offers a plethora of amenities to its students. These include various societies, boarding, and lodging, a modern gymnasium, swimming pool, all games and sports facilities, career guidance, 100% placements, medical facilities, etc.

6. MNNIT, Allahabad, UP

The Institute offers nine B.Tech., nineteen M.Tech. Degree Programs, MCA, MBA, M.Sc. (Mathematics & Scientific Computing) & Master of Social Work programs. It also registers candidates for the Ph. D. Degree. The Government of India has recognized the institute as one of the centers for the Quality Improvement Programme for M.Tech. &   Ph. D.

7. MNIT, Jaipur, Rajasthan

Situated in the picturesque city of Jaipur, with a campus of 317 acres of lush greenery, the institute is a spectacle of harmony in modern architecture and natural beauty. It was founded in 1963 and given the status of an NIT in 2007. The institute has already produced over 12,000 successful graduates since its establishment.

8. VNIT, Nagpur, Maharashtra

The institute has a proactive Training & Placement Department, which provides its students a platform for applying their technical acumen to gain valuable experience by working in the mainstream industry. Apart from acting as an interface for recruiters seeking talented young graduates and post-graduates in various disciplines, the placement cell also provides necessary guidance to the students for career planning and personality development.

9. SVNIT, Surat, Gujarat

Based in Surat, one of the most important port cities of Gujarat, the campus is spread out over 250 hectares of lush green forest. The Training & Placement cell believes in industry-institute interaction and encourages the companies to offer an internship to B.Tech & M.Tech students.

10. NIT, Durgapur, West Bengal

Since its inception in 1960, NIT Durgapur has inculcated the spirit of academic fervor and excelled in various domains of knowledge. The institute has a very active placement department, which is assisted by a committee comprising of representatives of students from the UG & PG streams. It offers various facilities to its students like a library built on a plinth area of 1000 Square Metres, High Voltage Laboratory, Central Instruments Facility, Computer Centre, etc.
